Holy crap thats intense. Solo gave me the chills. I felt like I was getting yelled at by an old woman with a really, really high pitched voice and its fucking lovely. I love how he incorporated that one lick that sorta repeats itself throughout his solo, however he throws in other notes and different melodies, absolutely fantastic.

Man, PLEASE..Clapton is a god in his own right but he is getting old now and his hands are slowing down. The torch has been passed, I experienced it when I went to see Clapton here a few years ago. They're both good at what they do, Derek's slide work is top-knotch, and slash is amazing at writing riff's and solo's. Sort of hard to compare the two really; different genre's and what have you. Though I don't really like Slash's work with Velvet Revolver, his stuff with Snakepit is fantastic.

sadly enough toyyota is more american made than most of the big 3's trucks, ford, chrysler, and gm are all just manufactured in the US, most of the parts are imported, I work, well worked at a plant that made parts for all 3 companies, and most of the components that weren't made in house were madie in mexico or china, so 'American Made' isn't what it used to be

Derek's doing that on purpose, he didn't "miss the key". He's quoting saxophonist John Coltrane from the song "Acknowledgment" off the album A Love Supreme. What Trucks is doing (and one of many things Coltrane is famous for) is playing a line, and then playing it again up a major third (two whole tones higher). This creates a cycle: after moving up a major third three times, you're back in the original key. I think Derek did a great job with it.

That's cool we all make mistakes. I still think its Ab B C but it doesn't matter. I have had a recent epiphany about this solo you might find interesting. In the beginning of the solo, before he takes out the slide, it sounds like he quotes "My Favorite Things" which is cool, but, the phrase that we have been discussing sounds like he is also quoting "Acknowledgement" from Love Supreme. Listen to it and you will hear what I'm talking about.

ooops.i meant to say minor 3rds. i guess i was thinking minor3rds and writing chromatic..my mistake. the transcription i've done(i have the whole solo) for the part we were talking about is 1,flat3,4 up 4x in minor 3rds. you got the eb,gb,ab and the gb,a,b right. but i think he starts on c,eb,f and ends on a,c,d. try it. he learned this from herring too.play the 13th fret on the b string,then 11 on high e, then 13..take this riff up 3 frets(min 3rds)..4x so you end at 22 on b then 20,22 on e.

Derek Truck is a unique guitarist due to the fact that he doesn't care how he looks like to the viewer(style+showmanship) but he emphasizes more on the music itself as what need to be heard of.. He is a calm but extraordinary guitarist. Sometimes an extraordinary guitarist dance like Britney Spears but the music is a bit dull (compared to the body language that he's expressing...)

but Derek uses a 65' super reverb which is a really clean amp, he gets his "overdriven" sound from his speakers which are pyle drivers, they are made for car stereos so they break up very easy at low volumes and when you crank the amp it sounds like you're using a tube overdrive pedal

i play a 50th anniversary 54 reissue strat, AND a 61 reissue SG, there is no way you can get that kind of sustain from a Fender or anything with a bolt on neck for that matter, Gibsons have so much sustain due to the set neck and angled headstock where Fender uses bolt ons with a straight headstock, most of the string energy is absorbed by the bolts where a Gibson resonates like the body and neck are a solid piece of wood, but its true about the amps, ones with thick gain will sustain better

Dreams is my favorite Allman's tune. To understand about Duane and why people are so passionate about his playing, a good thing would be to directly compare Derek's playing here with Duane's playing on the original recording on the Allman's first album. If you listen carefully, you can hear why Derek deserves his high reputation, but you will also hear why Duane's playing is considered untouchable by many. There is just something about Duane's glides... they're really "out there".

I think your opinion is right. I have said before that with a slide this young man cannot be touched. He is ranked (I believe by Guitar player magazine) as #81 in the entire world which I believe is short changing him. He has an understanding of the instrument that is posessed by few. His attitude is that of a humble young man and he has great respect for those who came before him. One day his name will be mentioned among the greats but he still has so far to go.

is that an SG 61 reissue right???i own a SG standard in heritage cherry too...but i think the sustain isnt only a matter of what guitar u play(though gibson are the best for it..) in a good amp every guitar gain a good sustain....and stratocasters can do that i believe

As for the Mayer comments. John Mayer is a talented guy, technically a very, very good guitarists--maybe even great. But NOT original. He plays like Stevie Rayvon. And he writes good, albeit, cheesey and sometimes DMB wannabe pop songs. I agree with the others, Derek is soooo original. And he has such a delicate, subtle touch. An old soul. Soooo awesome... Mayer vs. Trucks? No comparison...And by the way, Mayer even knows that...

I have been playing for about 23 years. Derek is the best slide player I have ever seen hands down. His ability and versatility is unmatched. Vaughan was a better all around player but as far as slide goes, Derek is the best I have ever witnessed. I have watched this young man grow up living here in Florida and he never seems to hit that "wall" we as average guitar players do. He is truely gifted.

when i saw carlos santana at the UFC arena in orlando i had never heard of derek trucks or the derek trucks band. but when derek opened for carlos that night, he blew my mind. dont play much slide guitar so i cant argue with you guys about wether or not a pick or finger picking is better, but i say who cares? its what way works best for you right? i admire derek and i think ill try to learn some slide :)

I just saw Derek at the Burlington, VT waterfront last night, and Mike M had Laringitis, but we decided he didnt need a singer, cause he really rocked all his songs with some amazing solos. And the encore, Key to the highway had Grace Potter as the singer, it was a gr8 show.

Mike Mattison. Been with them a while. I don't think he has other work out. The band said they "found" him singing in a subway on the Gibson Green Room video. Very soulful.

They're too busy trying to promote the minimal talents who are easily controlled and who can make them the most money with the least talent.
