Definitely a goal. Look at 0.08, the ball is free. Best was so quick to beat Banks to the ball, AND flick it to the right place, AND beat Banks to it to head it in. I asked George about it once, he remained convinced it was a goal and Gordon wasn't !! Anyway, it doesn't matter now, just look at the crowd behind him so entranced by his skill, forget the ref, and treasure the memory of a genius at work.

I'm not disputing the brilliance of Best IMO he was the greatest player in the world at the time. What I'm saying (as a qualified referee) it's not a goal. You can't do it. The 'keeper must be allowed to release the ball fairly. In those days it was obstruction to do what Best did. In todays game as I've explained it's a cautionable offence. It doesn't matter if you or I disagree with it, it's the laws of the game that you can't do it.

no i don't agree, there were many goals scored the same way at the time that were allowed. I used to be a goal keeper and i was told if there was player hanging around just to hold the ball and wait until he was a safe distance away. (this was when i was a kid in the eighties) I know the laws have changed now but back in those days i think most hadn't tried it and many refs allowed it. I still think because it was georgie best scoring the goal the ref didn't allow it.

It doesn't matter, the laws of the game say you can't do what Best did. It's obstruction, regardless that most think it's a great goal it's not legal. The same thing happened a couple of weeks ago and the player got cautioned. Repeat after me it's not a goal. :-)

Why blame the ref? It's wasn't a legal goal and it still isn't. Back then it it came under obstruction, today the 'keeper is deemed in possesion of the ball until he kicks it. Players still try these days and the same law applies. Only these days you get cautioned for trying it.
