Yeah you have to work fast. I mix two batches for a casting of this size. In the video you can see at about 25 seconds my assistant is applying the cloths to the first batch while I am out of camera mixing the second batch. So long as the second batch is started to be applied before the first sets, they stick together fine. The hard part is getting the cloth on before the alginate sets. Sometimes I spray a retarder to extend the set time on the surface of the alginate.

But in 5 minutes you have to work really fast - cause even though you mix a new batch and put it on the one that has already set - it wont stick to one another. How do you go around that problem? I take it - that it is one mix per mould if you cant blend it before the 1st one sets? What fabric are the cloths you use? just the same as wiping a table?

You can get everything you need at a store called The Complete Sculptor - 90 Vandam St @ Hudson, in Manhattan. You can get there on the 1 train. Second choice would be Pearl Paint on Canal St. Right by the 6 train. You will get better advice at the Complete Sculptor though.

The first coat is FiberGel from Artmolds. It is an alginate with celulose fibres for strength and to reduce run off. It sets like a soft rubber. The yellow sheets are a cloth to bond to the alginate before it sets. You can buy them at a supermarket. The last coat is dental Plaster from a hardware store. It bonds to the cloth (plaster bandages could also be used here.

Fibreglass and resin would not be safe on a person, would also be a waste and take to long to set. The alginate and plaster mould are generally destroyed removing from the casting. For making copies I make a silicone mould with a fibreglass shell from the original casting.

I would like to know what materials, and process was used to create this mold? What is the yellow material in use What do you think would be faster, plaster with or alginate Can fiberglass be used over Alginate? And lastly, where is the best place to buy the materials? You need to apply something (cotton wool, wipes, or cheese cloth) to the alginate before it sets fully. Then apply the plaster over that layer. If the alginate sets fully, nothing will stick to it.

We use some plaster bandages over the plaster and cloth. I just find the liquid plaster conforms to the alginate better. The yellow cloth is cut up absorbent kitchen wipes.

Does your method produce a better result (than using standard wet plaster bandages)? I've done a little lifecasting, but I've always supported semi-dry alginate with standard plaster bandages. Is the yellow cloth a special product someone manufactures for this purpose?
