The ODJB according to LOUIS ARMSTRONG in his autobiography...was formed in 1909 and they were called the Old Dixieland Jass Band and were the first to call themselves jass... and they started the style known as Dixieland, that everyone copied, so they later changed their name to ORIGINAL Dixieland Jass Band to let people know they were the originators of the Dixieland style... Papa Jack Laine's bands did not play Jazz anyways, or did they?It wasn't recorded so we'll never know.
By: Lualaba. on 19 Nov 08, 16:17:30
The term "Jass Music" is at very least two years older than this. All five of these guys learned how to play jazz in Papa Jack Laine's Reliance Brass Band. If you're gonna say this band invented the genre, the burden of proof's on you.
By: dancingwithfrogs. on 14 Nov 08, 21:43:31
@whateverfukinever: Concerning this theme there´s a quite interesting book written by Horst H. Lange: " Als der Jazz begann 1916-1923". It´s also available in englisch.
By: whateverfukinever. on 14 Nov 08, 07:46:20
"This was NOT the very first jazz song. It was the first jazz tune RECORDED. Jazz did not begin with these guys in 1917. Jazz was already being played by many musicians several years earlier." But can you prove that? LOL. No, because it was never recorded so the world will never know. : P Plus before the ODJB it was not called Jazz. So for all we know, maybe it wasn't played before the ODJB. Maybe the stuff that came before was just what we would now call ragtime. Who knows?
By: whateverfukinever. on 14 Nov 08, 07:44:04
'culture theives' Let me ask you this...Do trumpets, saxophones, pianos, cornets, and clarinets come from Africa? Or from Europe? ; ) What about Marching Band music and Classical Music?? Because without these things there would be no Jazz music. Who gave Jass it's name?(White people). So White people who play Jazz are not culture thieves, and...no one played like the ODJB before they came along. They an original sound. They don't get the credit they deserve.
By: whateverfukinever. on 14 Nov 08, 07:34:12
...futhermore...the first published Blues song and first known song to use Blues in the title was published by Hart Wand, a White man from Oklahoma, the name of the song was Dallas Blues. There would be no Blues without White Appalachian Folk music/Country/Hillbilly music and White Gospel/Hymns which was the original Gospel.White guys like Jimmie Rodgers had an enormous impact on the development of the Blues in the early 20th century. Yet...Blues is always called "Black music"...This isn't fair.
By: whateverfukinever. on 14 Nov 08, 07:30:31
"I must ask: How would the ODJB be celebrated if it was a black band?" It seems to me to be that the mainstream today likes to downplay and not acknowledge the enormouse impact White musicians and White/European styles had on American music like Jazz and Blues. For instance there would be no Jazz if it were not for Classical and Marching Band and there have been many very influential White Jazz players from day one. But yet they still call it "Black music" and ignore the White influence...

In my recent book Muziek van de duivel from Aspekt publishers at Soesterberg Holland you can see that the ODJB maded an earlier recording at Columbia with Darktown Strutters Ball and Indiana. But besides that it is great to hear these guys! Many thanks!
By: dancingwithfrogs. on 04 Oct 08, 09:48:57
"Only four years before I learned to play the trumpet in the Waif´s Home, or in 1909, the first great jazz orchestra was formed in New Orleans by a cornet player named Dominick James LaRocca. ... His orchestra had only five pieces, but they were the hottest five pieces that had ever been known before." (Louis Armstrong, "Swing That Music", 1936) I must ask: How would the ODJB be celebrated if it was a black band? (I mentioned, that I prefer black jazz, so that´s not the problem.)
By: robotgirls. on 04 Oct 08, 02:51:54
The origins of jazz are: Blues (the way the trumpets were played in jazz is very reminiscent of the blues) Ragtime European Classical Marching bands/Military music & to a lesser extent, black spirituals. Jazz is the "True American Music", because although it was almost exclusively created by blacks (despite being played early on by white musicians), it has influence in both Old Europe and Old Africa, but it is something that could ONLY come into being in America.
By: kspm01. on 01 Sep 08, 14:36:07
Agreed; definitely Fuller is one of the bands to be added to the list.
By: ToddCMorgan. on 01 Sep 08, 14:07:21
You guys forgot about Earl Fuller's Famous Jazz Band, they started recording in 1917, and there sound is closer to the style of The Original Dixieland Jazz Band than the others you mentioned! Still I'd have to agree that of all of the bands that recorded in 1917, ODJB was the best!
By: thehater84. on 07 Aug 08, 21:54:54
yes
By: belleamant. on 04 Aug 08, 00:21:43
beautiful .)
By: kspm01. on 03 Aug 08, 12:36:50
I agree this inevitably is a neverending discussion :-) Still all the orchestras I mentioned started their career in 1917, hence more or less at the same time as the ODJB.
By: dancingwithfrogs. on 03 Aug 08, 12:29:32
You might be right, but what about the comparability I mentioned? None of those orchestras reached the quality of LaRoccas boys, they even didn´t play jazz at all but tango(Borbee) or appeared first after the ODJB had established their fame. Unfortunately this seems to be a never ending discussion, which is worth to be cleared by professional historians. I hope this will happen in 2017.
By: kspm01. on 03 Aug 08, 09:35:46
At least Borbee's Jass Band, Frisco Jass Band, Wilbur Sweatman & His Jass Band and Handy's Orchestra of Memphis. There are others, lesser known ones too.
By: dancingwithfrogs. on 02 Aug 08, 22:09:00
I don´t know any comparable orchestras of that early times of "Jass". Do you?
By: kspm01. on 02 Aug 08, 21:58:14
Although choice is more limited for 1917, several other good orchestras started recording that early.
By: dancingwithfrogs. on 02 Aug 08, 21:45:30
Considering all the facts every single element of this new music is of european origin. The influence of the black blues came later from 1920 on (Mamie Smith, "Oh,Joe!", 1921, which marks another musical revolution). In Africa you will find more than 160 different (mostly monotonous) kinds of rhythms but none like that. My favorite late 20´s jazzmen are D.Ellington, F.Henderson and B.Moten. What choice do I have for the year 1917? That´s not just my opinion but also that of Louis Armstrong.
By: betteroffsingle. on 10 Jul 08, 19:20:29
There were awful bands of black players but not because of their race, just simply not good musicians. Good and bad everywhere. It has to do with natural talent not race. You have it or you don't. For some examples of pretty awful stuff, there's a CD called Jazz The World Forgot. I think that's the title. And most of it is better forgotten. But it does show that not every single black jazz band were of the caliber of King Oliver, or the ODJB.
By: betteroffsingle. on 10 Jul 08, 19:06:30
Jim, Samurai is wrong in saying "These" as in the entire band. However, Nick LaRocca is on record as saying that he personally invented the sytle and that negros couldn't have done so. Who knows what was going thru his mind to make a statement like that. But there is nothing on record I'm aware of that has the band in agreement one way or the other. As for any black band blowin' em away, well, that isn't true at all. I've heard some awful black bands that couldn't touch ODJB,

There were rumors that Bolden recorded an "Edison" wax cylinder (see his Bio: "In Search Of Buddy Bolden: First Man Of Jazz") but it's never been found, in spite of rewards offered since the 50's.
