In reality though, a torpedo would not be the first choice to destroy a surface ship, they are generally used for attack on other Submarines. A torpedo takes too long to reach the desired target, would give the enemy ship time to retaliate before the torpedo reached them or might even miss it's target if countermeasures are used effectively.

FYI, this is exactly what a ship would look like when hit by a Mk48 torpedo, that is if you are lucky. If this ship had a full load of fuel and weapons the explosion would have been even greater. As another poster stated, modern submarine launched torpedoes are designed to "break the back" of the enemy ship causing greater structural damage than just blowing a hole in the side. Granted the hole would be quite large but the ship could feasibly still float and/or sail home and be repaired.

Yeah, I read about this some 5 years ago. Basically when used for propulsion systems in deep space, it's like free energy. it accelerates very very slowly but it's "constant" acceleration. The program was actually about a joint live-fire exercise with Canadian and Aussie forces trying to sink a decommissioned Aussie Destroyer. It was a sort of competition between destroyers, aircraft and submarines to see what effect different munitions had on the ship. It was ironic how the death blow was dealt.

Maverick, It was a Sherman/Hull Class Destroyer. She was commissioned in 1959. She was my first ship. I was stationed on board in 1980-1981. That last explosion took place between the aft stack and mount 52. I used to sleep right next to the ammunition elevator for mount 52 and work right below that in Bravo-4, the after engineroom. That class of destroyer was the last of the "All-Gun" destroyers. Google "Actual History of the USS Mullinnix". The same SINKEX videos are there.

There were no risks taken with Enterprise, which was precisely the main problem with the show. The attempts at story arcs up to and including the final season wreaked of desperation (as did the re-addition of "Star Trek" to the actual title of the show after removing it initially) to find viewers, all the while doing little that hadn't already been done better in other Trek shows. There is no insult in pointing this out. I love Star Trek too, which is why I will not defend sub-par versions.

That's crap, DS9 is best remembered for it's exploration of the human condition, which is primarily what Star Trek has always been about; the space battles were secondary in that show rather than the focus, as with the later series. Gene was close to going off the deep end before he died anyway, attempting to remove all character conflict from TNG and making it more than difficult to tell human stories. Enterprise was just a halfhearted attempt to milk more money out of the franchise.

The US did not 'lose' per se in 'Nam--politics caused our Congress to break the American promise to S.Vietnam (horrible result). I love ALL WW2 planes..The SM79 was considered a very good bomber, and was a very capable torpedo bomber. Fast and well protected. The Italian Mc202 was a Bf109 equivalent, and did VERY WELL against Hurricanes and Spits. Also, I have read that Italy had a fantastic pilot training program before WW2 and thus they had excellent pilots flying some very good planes. There were some outdated types (like in any airforce at the start of ww2), like the biplanes, but they were off in colonial areas..

The adjustable ballast tanks use 5 vdc valves and R-134 (freon) gas that is used in auto air conditioning systems. That fills the tanks and a second set of valves vent the tanks so the sub will sink. I use a converter box on the RC receiver that takes one channel and converts it to 8 switched outputs (on/off) so I can control the valves and more...

The body is made out of schedule 40 PVC pipe sold by Home Depot. Make sure you have a lot of ventilation if you drill or accidentally melt the stuff since it outgasses. The stuff is impervious to water and seals up really well.

Yes, it fires the rocket(s) 4 of them actually. It can do it either fully submerged and "hovering" or on the surface. The guidance system on the rockets sucked, though and they went anywhere they wanted to go.

Actually, it sort of evolved over about 12 years. It started out as a wooden boat that accidentally was pushed underwater by a motor that was too powerful. We dried it out and decided to make the thing into a sub by adding fins and it worked. We then re-made it out of plumbing PVC from home depot and it evolved from there.

Thanks for the suggestion. It used a conventional RS-540 motor and moved pretty fast on that. When I built it we didn't have brushless motors. Actually too much speed in a submarine isn't a good thing since they tend to crash into the mud and get stuck and are hard to find (been there, done that!).

Hi, thanks! It was a one-off I made from Home Depot plumbing parts (PVC) if you can imagine that. The rockets were Estes C-60 boosters. The gearbox spun two counter-rotating props (in-line) giving it a forward speed of about 5 mph. The whole thing was pretty dangerous, in hindsight I'm lucky to be alive.

Yep, video would be cool, but the water is pretty murky. I was thinking about putting a Lego NXT in it and having the computer run the sub but needed some way to get it to do acoustic mapping. Lots of ideas but no time to do them.
