I heard it was 800,000 to make that model of the Enterprise. I remember one of the SFX guys talking about it during the 25th Anniversary documentary, when it was broadcast on BBC Two back just before Star Trek VI came out.

I can see why some people didn't like TMP... although I like it just fine. But regardless, *this* was the scene that introduced the Enterprise as a character in her own right. I don't think seeing her die in ST3 carries quite the same impact unless you've seen her effectively born right here.

Fantastic model ! The new for the prequel is too ugly !

500,000 I believe thats the right answer to the motion picture model NCC-1701

Best Star Trek film ever!

The wing like assembly that leads to the engines was actually introduced by Matt Jefferies (Creater of the Enterprise)but it didn't make it into the earlier design of the Telivision Model. Also, this model you see here was sold a few years back at auction when most Star Trek stuff was moved out of the old Paramount Studios

leisurely because it was cancelled from the tv screens 10 yrs earlier and robert wise felt the need to slowly reintroduce characters
By: daneframe. on 16 Nov 08, 14:58:03
That's probably one of the best movie models ever created. Does anyone know how much that thing ended up costing to build? (In 1978-9 dollars?)

Wrath of Khan was way better this version was boring

I really want to like this movie. Watch any 5-10 minute section from the move and it's awesome. The problem is that two hours worth is mind-numbing. I think the director's edition in 2001 helped somewhat, but ultimalety the pace of the movie seems far too leisurely. A shame, as clearly a lot of thought and care went into the film.

Best Star Trek movie ever. This specific piece of the movie is wonderful and incredible, music, image, emotion, everything together in a perfect return... Wonderful cine version for a wonderful TV serie.

Agreed!

In a way I like this design philosophy better than even the TNG era - well, maybe not against the Sovereign Class - ie Enterprise E.

amazing special effects!!

Interesting note here..as the new ENTERPRISE has been unvieled..JJ abrams had specifically refered to THIS SCENE as inspiration..that it showed how real and how utterly massive the Enterprise COULD be. Apparently the introduction of the new Enterprise on film will be very similiar to this classic scene. This was one of the best parts of TMP. Lets hope the new TREK reaches for the same standard.
By: SkewYT. on 12 Nov 08, 00:36:44
Because it doesn't meet their EXACTING personal standards. The last few spinoffs met with the same problem. To me, however, it's just Star Trek. It's not perfect, but it's not a personal attack, either.
By: Chiggs58th. on 10 Nov 08, 22:45:07
I can't understand why STAR TREK fans hate this movie so much. It's a beautiful, moving, work of art and the lone example of hardcore scifi in the soft scifi STAR TREK universe to boot. And the devine music by the late great Jerry Goldsmith... need I say more?
By: willubhave. on 10 Nov 08, 02:52:32
out of all star trek movies and shows-that ship is the most impressive, it attracts Klingons, old buddies(KAHN), gods (shakaree), aliens (veeger), and KIRK. It would be cool if it attracted the BORG....
By: Spiderking9. on 06 Nov 08, 05:07:26
The impression I always got from seeing this scene in the movies in '79 and the fantastic score, one of the best ever by Goldsmith perhaps only surpassed by his score for "The Blue Max" that this was "Holy Ground". The Enterprise in it's most majestic form, and the sense of pride expressed by Kirk.

you're wrong. You're getting your information from a William Shatner book. For those not privy, Shatner wrote that the planet that V'ger came into contact with that gave it sentient life was the Borg homeworld. Finding it a kindred spirit, they sent it back towards Earth so it could find its creator. There was nothing considered canon about any of it though
By: ricus78. on 28 Oct 08, 08:54:15
The way how Kirk looks at the new Enterprise is one of the best moment of the whole saga.
By: Zobor111. on 28 Oct 08, 05:21:40
I would like to see the Enterprise battle a Klingon Cruiser - K'Tinga class battlecruiser. Not a Bird of Prey. That would be a real fight!
