growing in pots is an idea I have been toying with. Living in a flat limits things. But I would ideally like a portable garden, with timing cycles to keep it so you can pick your food fresh each day. But that would require a lot of knowledge and dedication. Another thing I am considering is a solar powered water distillation process for drinking water, even from sea water. But I am thinking the dam water has too many extras, from fluoride to algae, to fertilizer run offs & hormones etc.

start by saving ALL your clippings, scraps, cut branches, dead leaves and everything your neighbors wanna give you...and make some compost piles, the next thing is to grow cover crops to nourish whatever barren spots you have....and finally do a study of what grows well there ALREADY and their growing habits and maximize on that. Finally, get it all organized, in terms of space, existing natural features, and individual plant requirements....and the rest is surprisingly easy...

've lived in Cuba, it has its strong points and weak points. The most disturbing thing I find is that people support its corrupt and oppressive government- its not even about ideology or anything else. Yes you have ADEQUATE education and healthcare, but what can you do with them? Many Cubans just sit in their rocking chairs and pass the day away because there is no opportunity to fulfill your dreams, or even simple pleasures like speaking your mind. I know, because my dad was jailed for it.

Technology is not the same as energy. Nanotechnologies still require energy input. Nothing we've developed yet has as much energy density as well as portability of oil. In the documentary "The Power of Community" which Megan talked about, we see how Cubans survived the sudden withdrawal of oil from their country. It was survival not necessarily preference.

On the extra plot I have 2nos. 4feetX4feet coup that neatly fits the last plot and is automatically fertilised by the chickens. We have sunshine all year round so, our harvests are roughly double of what you get in colder climates. The most important concept in this sort of compact gardening is to always know the right seeds to plant for maximum harvest. I usually get them seeds from the local Agri University. It really works. I have 4 adults and 1 kid in my home.

Im from Malaysia, and the self sufficient farm is still a distant idea to most asians in urban areas. Most are caughtup with the so called "growing economy" hype surruounding us at the moment. I for one believe self sustainable farming should be for every commuity so to keep us in touch with the land and the satisfaction it brings. I worked on a small "real" farm for a summer in Nampa, Idaho. I was amazed how the lady who owned the farm did not utilize regenerative nutrient resources that were available because the farm was actually producing them, nor did she practice proper soil conservation when releasing the water from the flume into her pasture for her animals and meadow grasses. I suppose that is why she threw me off the farm, she was a very obstinate old lady who did not want change on her farm.

I think capitalism and free enterprise are totally different things. Someone selling or bartering a bit of excess kimchi in return for another vegetable or specialized service sounds more like mutualism. The point is the resources (land, water, factory, etc) should be controlled by direct democracy, while the labor put into the land should be directly owned by the laborer. If you work for yourself, then you are in charge of yourself. If you work for someone else, it's wage slavery.

Sounds like a good balance - I'd value something similar. As we have less energy, life will of necessity become simpler. Going solar does make life simpler (we're off-grid). But it'll be important to have low-tech options, like hand tools, especially as liquid fuels get pricier and rationed.

How very Buddhist. :) I think culturally speaking we've created enough complexity to see that simplicity IS the way to go, however we do have the benefit we can keep certain aspects of the modern. My ideal would be a solar powered farm with chickens and lots of growing space for food while still be able to access the internet to share ideas and get help from like minded people. I don't think I'd want to go completely low-tech myself.

Lovely. Some of the simplest and still standing cob cottages were built very quickly to take possession of a piece of land --- hundreds of years ago. They sometimes still have a duckpond, where the soil, and pebbles (for the foundation)were dug from. By quickly, I mean two days. The thatch (just long, dead grass stems)came later, once ownership or whatever had been established. Dead grass stem roofing lasts much longer than petro duroid "shingles". Do these people eat their dandelions?

In many cases, environmental tax reform in and of itself would indeed be regressive. I would always wish to structure it so that the first $20,000 (+-) of income would be exempt from income tax. That way a family living a modest lifestyle and not driving a car would be rewarded by paying very little in taxes. Also, essential good such as food coudl be exempt (especially if it's organic). Environmental tax reform could be structured so as to enthusiastically embraced by the working poor.

Actually, I think you may be confusing this with biogas digesters, which have been used in India and elsewhere to make methane gas--an excellent low-tech process. MagneGas requires a large input of electricity (via the arc welder in the demo), which is a process developed only in the last few decades.

Last year, the congress voted against mandatory MPG, voted for drilling for oil in the Artic Nat Wildlife Refuge, Ford dropped its hybrid ideas, and what else - drilling off the coast I think? Yes, I agree that oil IS finite. My only real concern is whether we are being manipulated/duped into accepting higher prices at the pump by this talk of PEAK OIL. We do our best to reduce my family's oil consumption - originally motivated by money and co2 concerns. I see fatcats driving HUGE SUVs. SELFISH PIGS! and then I say, well perhaps since they are so selfish, they deserve to pay $600 a barrel. But why me with my 50+ mpg car :-?

The infromation about peak oil is coming largely not from the industry itself, but from former oil-industry geologists like Colin Campbell and investors like Matthew Simmons. Richard Heinberg is a very credible writer/educator, who is gathering information and bringing it to the public (Powerdown, The Party's Over). Given that oil is a finite resource, logic says that someday it'll decline. The question is when--and, are we ready for that, given our total dependence on it?

Having grown up in the 70s and heard all this before, having been promised fusion by this point in time (and seeing no realization), how do we know this peak oil situation is FOR REAL this time around? I'd don't argue that the US economy and dollar is ready to tank. But how do we know this isn't some dastardly lie made up so that big oil can charge $600 a barrel because they can claim PEAK OIL? Actually, the United Nations anticipates peak population at around 11 billion, some time mid-century. Regarding "exploitative" systems... 1) Human nature is not going to spontaneously change. Our nature is baked into our DNA. 2) Free markets preclude this presumed "dominator" model. More freedom in markets means wealthier, happier people. Hence, this video's premises are silly. Actually, you brought up the local 'floods' in the UK. I merely corrected your error. You mention the IPCC's 0.8+ projection. It's wrong. The increase 2008 Jan - Jun was 0.1+ with a steep - trend. Source: ground-based (HadCrut) and satellite (UAH LT). By 2010 we see a projected DROP in global temperature. However, from 2000 CO2 production has INCREASED. This is total inconsistent with the 'IPCC theory'. You know what should happen? The theory should be proven false. Wonder why it is not?

We have different positions, which I expect not to change. I may not be good at repeating their facts, but I turn to scientists and researchers like I've cited here, as well as on Energy Bulletin, for their research. As well as my observations: locally our Sierra Nevada snowpack has reduced 20%. I think you are looking at local effects (of course towns will flood when built below the floodplain), but not seeing the bigger picture of accelerating increasingly violent weather events.

The compromisation of floodplains due to terrible town planning. Houses were actually built BELOW the water table! 2. Strong rains and high tides. Hurracaines, for example, are created due to extremes in temperature, relative humidity and atmospheric density between the the tropics and the cooler Southern air.
