While I think the war in Vietnam was unjustified and spurred by mindless xenophobia and government greed the use of napalm was justified. The vietcong were using the dense jungles as hiding places and booby traps. Against guerilla forces there is not much you can do but be complete and brutal. That's once you are forced to fight a guerilla force of course. Vietnam was an act of butchery on our part.

They are young men and want to be young men. We had a pig roast in Somalia, we shot the wild boar from helicopter gunships. In the beginning, in Somalia, we tried to avoid civilian casualties. Then the skinnies learned to use the Somali sniper position. They would get a pregnant woman with a baby to stand in a doorway holding the baby. The sniper would get between her legs and under her dress where you couldn't really see him. Once they started doing that, everyone got fragged.

What seems totally unrealistic is playing music on the helicopters and surfing on a beach that wasn't secured yet. This type of attack may have been typical, I don't know. Civilian attacks on US combatants may have also been common. I've read that for the Viet Cong there wasn't a clear distinction between combatants and civilians.

I think this whole scene really says a lot about the nature of film itself, and war films. From farther back it's all badass, Ride of the Valkeryies(sp?) helicopters and explosions, like knocking down army men. But get on the ground up close it's much more horrible, soldiers screaming with massive injuries, civilians dead, napalm ect. It says something about the concept of war to a film audience and when it's no longer possible to make war look sexy.

interesting point of view, honestly. but i really like the movie because all those scenes you have referred to as too long, are, in my opinion, just showing the senselessness of the war in an unique and brilliant way. the viewer understands how war can ruin not only people but mankind. so i think the movie is great, also because it shows a lot of different faces of the war. but , after all, world would be a boring place if there was no one to talk about such things;)

I didn't really like this movie...it had some good ideas and good scenes, but this is at the bottom of my war movie list. There are so many better ones out there. Damn straight! The playboy scene, while "fun" to look at, was a waste of time; and the French Plantation Scene could have been its own short story. The only thing I liked was the extra scene with Kurtz when he was reading the Times, because I always thought they never gave Kurtz enough screen time. I think they could have even just kept that scene in the Original.

My daughter and I worked with Jay on the movie "She's out of my League" which will probably be out next summer. He is so friendly and the nicest guy to work with. Well he is in the 505th battalion 173rd airborne according to the men who come and give Willard his orders. I believe he's got a "ranger" tab so it seems he's completed the ranger training. It appears he receives orders primarily from military intelligence which usually works concurrently with the CIA and other services. Hmong people is Lao nationals, or better yet "Laotian", but Lao ethnic is referred to as "Laotian citizens" of LPDR too. By the way, educate yourself Lao person, you are not "Laos". However, the ones who are stuck in the jungles are the ones who DO NOT wish to cooperate w/current govt.
