actually i can play his stuff, i just choose not to cause hes boring. EVH is soo much better! And when you get into guys like paul gilbert and jason becker your playing has to be much more technical than kirk hammets crap. Hammet relies on a wah and high gain to cover up his crappy playing and his vibrato is the worst on the planet. And dont talk about EVH and Gilbert and Becker either negatively cause im pretty darn sure u cant play there stuff

I never accused you of saying that you need to sweep pick to sound good. I just said that you don't need it to sound good, so it doesn't matter if he does or not. Wah is fine. Jimi Hendrix, Zakk Wylde, and many others use it almost exclusively. Oh, and Kirk Hammett's solo for Leper Messiah requires fast sweep picking. /watch?v=qzPsAP03250 Of course, he doesn't use it often, but he has.

I'd actually agree with kirk. Mostly now solos are actually more common than 5 years ago. I think the no solo idea came about because of Korn and those bands that started a trend of no solo type metal. Realistically solos are an important part of Metal and have always been since it's inception. The idea of no solos really does date the music to a time period where solos were taboo during the "Korn Era". Problem is most band are doing solos again...including Metallica.

Agree 100% with Kirk! Not every band/song NEED solos, but it has become almost a lost art. It also has to do with radio airplay. Music construction is very formulaic now and solos take up time. They're plenty of songs that I like that don't have solos and sound great, but solos in rock/metal (hell, jazz and blues) goes almost hand in hand. Bob Rock actually has it right, and the theory that Lars has about not wanting to sound pinned to a specific time, does exactly that by removing solos.

The problem though is that it becomes one dimensional. Its worked for him which is fair enough but the catch is that its only been Kirk and James for the last 28 years or so, which means that he hasn't had the chance to properly explore his musical threshold in terms of theory and i guess the same can be said for hanneman. if you ask me, i'd say Alex Skolnick from Testament would have the upper hand on all of them because of his jazz background.

well kirk knows more than he expresses in his solos. Like on load and reload especially there is a lot of "un-metallica" chord progressions. And I know a lot of the great harmonies on and justice for all were written by kirk but the reason why kirk uses e minor so much is because most of metallicas songs are in e minor and hes a player who likes everything to fit tight harmonically. Im not sayin hes yngwie malmsteen but he definately knows more theory than one would suspect.

Respect for being a GIT teacher man. i'm a degree guitar student at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. to be honest i think all three of them have their areas of specialisation, although i doubt any of them know that much music theory. Dave mustaine experiments with diminished arpeggios simply because of his exposure to peeps like Poland, Young, Friedman and the like. Kirk hammett is best described as a speeded up Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Young plays outside (jazz like chromatics). right?

you compare kirk to mustaine and praise him? mustaine is a good composer, not a very talented guitarist. just watch all technical guitarists from known to unknown, tons of good guitarists. i don't know what kirk is trying to teach us here, if it's all the backings, hetfield is way better than kirk. and kirk as a soloist isn't impressive, though i like the band metallica. surf youtube, look for broderick, the x megadeth guitarist, at least he will teach you something more than kirk

nah, Dime rules, Alexi is a riff stealer. i can hear it in many songs. but a great guitar player is John Petrucci or Paul Gilbert. you heard them before, if so, what you think? But i don't know why this is talk about on a KIRK SOLO. right? btw, Kirk rocks as well. Metallica may be my band but a true fan knows whats the best through hearing whats great and not choosing by band. i was that way for a short bit over a year ago. But i hate when people diss Kirk on the wah wah.

I already have seen metallica live, but I had to travel so far to see them well it was a good thing I was on the road when I saw them. And when we do get a show most of the times the get canceld and they never come back.
