This man is so well talented that it is too hard for me to decide if Philip Glass is better sounding. If you like this, I suggest you listen to Sufjan Stevens. He has similar sounds as Steve Reich. I strongly reccomend him if you enjoy Steve Reich. I heard Steve Reich through Sufjan Stevens.

Help me out - I thought that Chris was mentored by Spanky at one point... am I confusing McCurdy with another drummer? Isn't this the same cat coming out of Mint Condition (the band)? To Saibus 2005 - this may sound repetitive to you, but keep in mind that people haven't really been playing like this until Chris Dave came along - which is why they call him "Daddy" - he's become the father of another way to play. Spanky is nice w/ his stuff though.

Ever heard one of the original recordings? Contemporary 'fast' performances will sound a lot slower! About the video : 0:15 : clarinet? ok, the glissando was good, but that note was way too bad 1:10 : the idea of the trumpet solo is that the trumpet is laughing. He smiled but sure didn't laugh. 5:59 : horrible, needs no explanation 6:15 : out of tune (and that's something you can do about) I didn't do an effort to keep on listening. It's a good performance, but it isn't a great one.

I first heard this piece in the Hollywood Bowl in the late 30's, Pauk Whiteman conducting. Oscar Levant on piano. When Hollywood made the film of Gershwin's life the producers used Whiteman and Levant because Whiteman introduced the piece in New York with Gershwin. Jose Milo should be arrested for presiding at this horrible off tempo performance. The pianist needs to listen to more 1920's jazz to get a feel for the riffs that would make this piece sound like what Gershwin wanted to talk about.

You can consider that as a "difficult" but creativity comes with knowledge, also creativity is being capable to create different emotions with the same groove. You can find an example of what I'm saying with Chad Smith, try looking for the modern drummer festival 2005, he plays for about 5 minutes the exact same groove, and just with the different intensities and intentions on his playing he gives you the feel of a song with different parts.

Try buying an instructional DVD called "The groove is here" It's a Steve Jordan's 2 hour explanation on how is so important to keep the same rythm....

Also keep in mind he's playing this over a loop played by the DJ. it may sound obvious that a great drummer plays on time. But the way Travis hits hard and plays perfectly on time is very impressive. Like i said, it may sound like something obvious for drummers, but easier said than done properly by many drummers out there. Not a crazy fan of Travis, but he's a VERY good drummer. And what he's doing in this clip is not easy. you don't have to be a thrashing "fill master" to be a "good" drummer.

That's why they can't appeal to a larger market. It just depends on whether you take into account the visual aspect of performing - most pop media groups will consider it equal, if not greater, than technical skills.
