Jack you do know this song is from 1992? The fact that it fits the current situation so well as to be receiving a huge cheer on every date of Cohen's current European tour is a happy co-incidence, or if you prefer a validation of the man's vision. I think there's quite a bit more irony here than you give credit for too - the line "on a visionary flood of alcohol" is fairly significant, I'd say. (Incidentally I know what you mean about Obama, but I'm sure LC does too).

My mum had "Songs of Leonard Cohen" in the linen closet, in '78 or so. I found it and listened to it. Still have the LP...maybe the worse for wear, but still have it, lyric sheet too. Of course it's morose and sad and self-absorbed. It was a different time. It's still true to itself and still worth hearing. It's odd. The man can't sing, couldn't play guitar to save his life. And yet... I have almost his entire catalog of recordings. I'll be the first in my town to get his new CD. I'll drag my family to see him in concert, if we're so lucky. I pay rapt attention to every word. And will be saddened when he no longer performs. And will think the World is a slightly better place for the being of this man, who can't sing, or play guitar that well. But, oh, can he write. How odd.

He hasn't spoken with his escentric brother in a long time, and now he's writing him to forgive him for ultimately making his wife happier (with whom he has since reconsiled). He is also reflecting on the troubled state of both their lives.
