I haven't seen the movie yet, I was assuming it is quite faithful to the book, and I can assure you that although it is pretty clear that it's a metaphoric story, the book is everything but obvious...Saramago is one of the most brilliant writers of our time (infact he's a Nobel prize!!!). Besides I didn't tell it is a hard metaphor, but a huge methapore, just as a synonimous of allegory. (I'm italian and I'm a physicist, my knowledge about literature technical language is only in italian).

i thought the exact same thing. And come on, its not a hard metaphor, it's pretty obvious. I even heard people complaining about gatting the whole point of the movie 30 minutes into it already.

oh my good the interviewer was so lame...the book is of course about a blindness epidemic, but it is actually a huge metaphore...so asking what would you miss the most if you suddenly got blind is something that has nothing to do with the meaning of the book or the movie...
