It's really quite simple actually, Capo 4 in this instance, but his original is in Capo 3. The chords used are C Am F and a type of B, basically use the shape of Am then take away your middle and ring finger and put the middle on the 2nd fret of the 5th string. That chord is used going from the verse to the chorus, and in the chorus. In the bridge it gets altered, add your ring finger to the 3rd fret of the 6th string. To do the riff play around with your middle finger on the C and F.

P.S. Bert Bachrach also proves the point about songwriters not suited to perform their own material. Like Webb, he struggles to hit the notes. That's why he always had very capable singers fronting his material. Webb simply cannot hit the notes. If this wasn't Jimmy Webb - let's say it was your neighbor singing, instead - you'd be cringing. When, in reality, it's really not that difficult to recognize vocal ability, I wonder why people are falling off their chairs about this performance.

It's usually good to hear the writer perform his or her own material. I have to admit that the vocals here are embarrassing: he simply does not have the voice for this material. The last 7-8 measures of this performance sound like Laura Nyro's piano playing. Other piano parts here sound like his song MacArthur Park -- perhaps too schmaltzy compared to the utter finesse of the vocals & arrangement of the Glen Campbell version. Still, one of the greatest songs written in popular music.

I always wanted to hear Jimmy Webb sing his songs that Glen Campbell made famous. I read somewhere that he was a weak singer, but I think he does a very respectable job here on this great song. Glen has the better voice for sure, but Webb sings this with feeling and puts his own style to it.

I didn't know he wrote a book but I'll look for it on Amazon. I've always been in awe of Jimmy Webb's songwriting. Forgive me for not haviong the time to read through all the posts, but wasn't he just 17 when he wrote McArthur's Park? (SP) Sure it's weird, but stunningly beautiful. actually, it's "(we) were PRESSED in love's, hot fevered iron, like a striped pair of pants" (caught in love's passion). I also translate the "danc(ing) between the parted pages" to represent the pages of life opening for Jimmy and his love, as they explored their new life together--never knowing what the next "page" (day of life) would bring for them. Skylark - I agree...but if you listen to the lyrics for "Nepenthe", "Orange Air", and "Requiem: 820 Latham" - all of them odd but poetic, you might sense a slight difference between them and a line like "between the parted pages/we were dressed in love's hot fevered irons/like a stripèd pair of pants" - great stuff, admitedly, but I smirk everytime I hear it. That said, I can't believe Webb is not seen to be as important as Bacharach or Laura Nyro.

Occassionally there will be an unattractive and abnormally strong woman that can handle military service without being a distraction. But that is a minority case. I've served in two branches of the military. Women are a liability to male military personnel and to overall military missions. The sexual tension and general lack of physical strength they provide are a lethal one-two punch. Military regulations forbid me from saying this aloud while I served, but now I can say the obvious. Webb was right. I hate to see him backtracking on the opinions that he put in his article printed in the seventies. Any fair look at the role that women are playing in the military today will show that it hurts the combat effectiveness of the American military. It's also of concern how pissed off a lot of women are about the whole Hillary thing as it is, and then he picks out an obviously sexist militaristic guy. That being said, Webb helps more than he hurts. This is very troubling, as far as VP slot goes. He's just the sort of guy to balance out the ticket, and look great doing it. And I take him at his word that he's done a lot to atone for his past mistakes, and applaude him for trying.
