Her sopranos gives me a headache... Cissy is a soprano with range, but her highs are very shrilly, almost like a shriek, which is not very pleasing to the ear. This is probably why she never made it as a solo artist like Dionne, or Whitney.

Years ago, Cissy made an appearance on the David Letterman show. Dave was trying to get Whitney to come on his show and had Cissy come first. She sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and at the end, Dave was speechless. His reaction: "Whitney who?" I was in tears by the end of Cissy singing, over powered by the conviction and sheer power of her voice, and the restraint she showed in not belting the whole thing until it was necessary. That's because all internet tabs are wrong. I have yet to find one that is totally correct. The best way to learn is by ear, and in this case, watch what the guy plays. He's one of the few who plays it like the original, because he's the original player. You want tab? You can't get it from watching him play it?

It's not the Bb Major scale. If anything, it's out of C Mixolydian mode, with an additional flatted 3rd. It can be taken from the C minor pentatonic shape, but Leo bends (or more often slides) the Eb note to become E natural. The notes go C, Bb, G, Eb(to E natural), C. Then, G, A, C, A, C. The A note on the 6th string doesn't fit into the C minor pentatonic scale, nor does the E natural. The chord played fo the majority of the tune is C7 or C9, both dominant chords, which are major in quality.

I'd say 11 is good to move up to if you want a chunkier sound than normal, which is great for some funk, depending on the style. I use 9's cuz I went through a "purist" Hendrix phase, and bought like 20 packs of Hendrix strings that were on sale, 3 for 7 bucks :P. They were all 9s.

Shirley Caesar seems to be one of the few that can take chest voice up like that. Gladys Knight and Tina Turner use mostly chest voice. Aretha definitely had a mix going on in the 70's. Her smoking made it impossible to utilize the mix so she took chest up. Now, even though she quit smoking, because of that, she can't take chest voice up as high so she currently sings mostly head with some mixture of chest.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this. This is the thing. Sometimes, you can hear it, sometimes you can't. That's the whole thing about having the mix sound is that you can't really detect it all the time. Someone already mentioned Brian McKnight. He would be a good example of the mix voice. You have some who stay more on the headier side (Rachelle Ferrell, Lisa Fischer,Natalie Cole, Tamia,etc)while you have others who blend more chest into it (early Aretha,Stevie,Brian).

I actually do not like Cissy's soprano. Sopranos have to be careful of their tone quality and Cissy is a soprano with range, but her highs are very shrilly, almost like a shriek, which is not very pleasing to the ear. This is probably why she never made it as a solo artist like Dionne, or Whitney.

Actually, if if there was no involvement of her head register than her voice would sound much different. When she belts high you can hear a certain 'ringy' point on the curve of her vibratto, that's called singers formant - a range of frequencies that you can't hear that project over the voice, that produce that ringy quality. It's impossible to achieve that by just "bringing the chest up too high".

Correction, the good singers sing correctly but we really don't know that. As I stated earlier, there are so many other factors that go into why one singer still has their voice while another's is gone. Whitney, in her day, worked a lot more than most r&b, gospel singers did. Remember, she was touted as a pop singer. We really don't know how well other singers would've been had they had the kind of schedule she had back then. Factor in partying (ala Whitney), and you'd be done too vocally.

We say that all the singers we know sing right and Whitney sang incorrectly. I can't argue with that but I think it had more to do with the other stuff she was doing. Belting doesn't have to be harmful but if you have bad vocal habits on top of it and not taking care of yourself, then you will see damage over the years. That harmony Cissy and Whitney do in head voice is not human. That is sick especially how they end it. Amazing harmony in head voice. How can Cissy be hoarse somewhat and produce those mad high notes in head and superhead voice.

Whitney's voice has undergone the same transition as her cousin,Dionne the sweet soprano is gone forever! Listen to Dionne's work in the 60's & compare it to work in the late 70's,early 80's totally different,still good but very different. It will be interesting to see if Whitney's fans will be able to accept her new sound,if the comments on this clip are any indication,I'll wager not 'cause it sounds like everyone is hoping for the old Whitney but that voice is lost to us. I hope I'm wrong! :(
