Yes Johnston's voice and guitar work are lacking but the songs that he wrote are honest and pretty damn cool. I noticed on RE1206's page you have a cover of M.Ward's Vincent O'Brien. M Ward lists Daniel Johnston as one of his influences, Bright Eyes did a cover of "Devil Town". If you want to be a good songwriter you have to look past production value and listen to what the artist is trying to get across. However if your not a songwriter than I understand why this wont make sense.

no, I'm totally with him. I don't get Daniel Johnston at all... he sounds pretty talentless, to me. I mean, it's nothing spectacular, the production qualities are extremely low and it's just... eh. I didn't say he didn't DO drugs. Lots of people did. But to say that's what caused his mental breakdown, we'll never know. Drugs perhaps exacerbated the problem, but they are not KNOWN to have been the ONE SINGLE problem, as people make out. And they state this unequivocably, like it's an anti-drug message or whatever. Well, THEY DON'T KNOW. The only people that know are his doctors and his family.
