I would assume a trigger trombone is detrimental to the work he was doing. You usually want to use a trigger trombone, not just for the trigger, but for the larger bore which creates a darker sound, which would not be appropriate in the given setting. In the setting he's in, he would want a trombone that "cuts" through, which he would find more in a small bore, non trigger trombone.

what assholes. they have no appreciation for trombones, or for music. Then again, that trombonist DID put the firecracker in his trombone. The trombonist probably was startled when the firecracker went off, and therefore accidentally threw the slide completely off the inner tubing.

These guys just wanna blow sh*t up. To be more realistic, the mouthpiece should be plugged to simulate the player. Then the slide might fly off. Also, if I was the conductor any object flying at me like that may cause me to jump into the audience, it wouldn't have to be a matter of pure physics. The myth may well be more plausible than indicated... haha

Like someone said, when the trombonist did it presumably, he was playing it. Meaning air being blown back from the explosion couldn't escape out of the mouthpiece forcing the slide to jump off. This time, the mouthpiece was open for air.

I heard jo play this live a few months ago when he came down to melbourne and did some master classes at Melb. Uni. He's awsome, but I preferred Christian Lindberg's master class. Jo is technically amazing, but he hasn't done much solo work before, only been the principle trombone in the NY phil - therefore he lacks that special quality. just compare his barber of seville to christian's (they're the exact same arrangement) and you'll hear the huge difference - it is HUGE.

Probably because of the sound quality on the recording (but I'm not blaming anyone for that) and the acoustic of the hall. It echoes a bit. I play this piece (slower than this!) and it is very hard to make it clear in a hall like that. It's better for the audience in a smaller room, which is a shame, it's my favourite piece of music.

I know the original marking is slower, but the previous two movements are slower, and the piece tightens up a lot and is more fun to listen to at the faster tempo.

Playing fast on the trombone is insanely difficult, because of the movement of the slide, and showing off how fast you can go is our Fun :) As well as having Note range competitions with the trumpets. It's fun :)

Lord and Par, it depends upon the horn and yourself. I play a Getzen, David Taylor, bass bone that I have had converted to the dual independent Thayer Valves. I play it open with a Monet BT-1L. Massive mouthpiece, but extremely flexible and the horn "speaks" in any register with solid authority that is almost a physical presence.

I like 5g for size. Are you talking about brands? If so I like the gold bach megatone ones. I think too many ppl use 6 and 1/2 al size. At least for large bore, 5g is better for tone.

well, quartet playing IS an entirely different scenario than band playing. That is, at least after high school band. A bass trombonist in a drum corps or military band should not play in the same way as a bass trombone in a quartet should play. military band literature does not exist for aesthetic purposes; its purpose is to strengthen morale for a violent force. with that said, the bassbone blends very well and the balance is great in this ensemble.

i love to hear a bass trombonist who isn't farting out his notes like those found on american recordings. Don't agree? Listen to most American made recording of band literature and you will hear bad bass trombone playing, or should I say the bass trombone playing flatulently. Then, listen to the European and Japanese recordings. Bravo to this guy.
