The girl judged because, well, it's her party. And as for moving the piece, it's part of the competition. Cakes are moved to their final location (i.e. delivered or picked up for a party or whatnot when you order one), so stability is kind of a big issue when making a cake.

Well, it's good to know you have high levels of cleanliness when you make your cakes. But you have to admit, we live in a world where gloves are imperative in food prep. So, what do YOU think about this show, where the (ahem) "chefs" are always seen molding specialty items with their fingers. I've seen them make little motorcycles, chairs, dogs, all sorts of stuff. And the basically mold and shape everything without gloves. Would you want to eat that item?

Of course I wear gloves when I handle the actual cakes, but you actually don't need the gloves when you're decorating with the icing, because many decorators use pastry bags, in which there is no contact between the hands and the actual icing so you don't have to worry about fingerprints or hepatitis, e-coli, ass germs, toilet paper pieces, etc. Not to worry though, no one's gotten sick from any of my cakes yet cuz i make sure I wash my hands first WITH SOAP. Antibacterial soap.

There are different styles of cupcakes pans, some with straighter sides. It looks like that is what was used for the smaller cupcakes. You could try a web search for cupcake pans, or a site like J. B. Prince. Happy Baking! MJR @ KAF

that was a great vid!! thanks for it!! just one q...at the end when you were showing the leaves on the cupcakes, your cupcakes were smaller and straight up, rather than fanned out at the top a bit. do you use a different kind of cupcake liner? if so...where do you get them? they're so cute that way!!! :D thanks!

I was at this show. In fact I don't think I missed but one or two years, $6 bucks for fair admission and a buck off with a cupon from the Times. I think I was playing in a garage band in '68 that rented the Boy Scout building across the street from the fairgrounds. On a break we heard music coming from the Floral Fiesta building & hopped the fence. Young Tower just blew our minds. Just saw these guys at the Portland Zoo this summer, one of the best bands ever! Wow 40 years...

David Garibaldi, one of the best drummers alive today, had rejoined the band during this time after years away. The group rarely does this original length version anymore.. just the first 1:20 you hear on this performance. They passed their 40th anniversary on 8/13/08 and still going strong.
