The main purpose of a hard drive is to store data. It is used to store your Operating System, Applications and user created files such as Documents, music (mp3 files), installations, etc. There are faster hard drives than others. You have to look at the specifications such as Interface SCSI, SATA or IDE, RPM (5400, 7200 or 10000 RPM) and Cache (2, 8, 16, or 32 MB).

WHY DON'T YOUR USE YOUR BRAIN? Clouds are made up of water vapor, which is a gas. The sunlight would dim out slowly. It wouldn't just suddenly go out. Oh, and for the camera viewing there should have been someone down by the steps in 1:44 . It would occupy too much time for you to go down the steps, to that position, in order to view the hard drives going from the top to the bottom of the steps. Oh. Your a jonas brothers fanboy. Yes the data is toast. However, there are usually some things left behind in the registry and other locations each time something is cleared. Also you can use Encase's ability to look at what is called MACE times and you will notice that the size of the clusters changed and notes a Date and Time. So while you cannot get the data back you can make a forensic case out of it showing the destruction of evidence.

I use EnCase and I have been unsuccessful in recovering a harddrive which used a similar program as evidence eliminator, it appears to have overwritten the data but it looks like it's using a binary checkerboard method with two passes of overwriting "DoD standard", then a third pass of pseudorandom garbage. I've attempted to recover the unallocated space but no go, is this data toast?

Does anyone know? I have a samsung 500GB drive in a external casing, last week I powered this hd on, and I heard a very loud screeeech! noise. Does anyone know what that couldve been and why that is? I think hd's park the heads when shut down. this harddrive is in external casing, and when my windows shuts down the pc, I have to manualy shut down this disk. Your only option to recover data from a broken hard drive is to send it a a costly data recovery business (hundreds of dollars or more). To avoid this, make regular backups of all important files to an external HDD, and mroe extra redunancy, to DVDs.

Hibernate actually is off. The computer has saved the data to the HDD. Anyways it's F8 you should be able to remove the hibernation info and you'll be able to restart.

No, probably not. Hard drives are likely to fail if you spin them up and down a lot or if you shut them down improperly too much. Also, games are always installed to hard disk already. Games usually only want the CD to verify you're not pirating it. Which of course, you are anyway :D

Well I experienced the 2nd and the 4th sounds from my Dell 8200 Deminsion computer about 2 weeks ago. I have a Western Digital Hard-drive, I am unsure of the model # though. The symptoms only appeared twice. It started at the Dell Post screen, then went blank with the noise while there was a white bar loading. Then it loads Windows XP and the noise stops. The noise has stopped for now. I did run the Windows scan-disk and it didn't find any bad sectors though.

My computer just restarts everytime I try to turn it on... Like when it says "Windows XP" and a little bar below is loading... right after that happens, EVERYTHING goes BLANK! Then after about 15 seconds it restarts, then it goes to the menu place where you can choose between safe mode/last known good configuration/start windows normally. my ps3 broke and it cost $160 to fix it. one tip i have for most ps3 owners out there if you swap out your hard drive you void your warranty and you need the original hard drive or sony will not repair your ps3. if you dont believe me call sony repair service. Also if you swap out your hard drive use a 5400rpm because a 7200rpm will break your system. i used a seagate momentus 7200.3 hdd and my system is broke.

They advertise 1 billion bytes (1Gb not GB), which is the actual storage size. 1 billion bytes is not equal to 1 GB. 1GB is 1.073 billion bytes. a 60 billion byte hard drive is measured as 55.87 GB. In order to have a 60GB reading you would need 64 billion bytes. This all boils down to 8 bits in a byte, 1024 bytes in a KB, 1024 KB in a MB, 1024 MB in a GB. Now do the calculation and find out how many bits are in a GB. Yes, it's confusing and they should be labeled Gb not GB. Oh well...

Sort of. But it goes by bytes. Like 1GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes right? Well an actual 1GB is actually less then the bytes they give you. You still have the 60+ GB but it will just read at 55GB. Look at your HD properties carefully. They give you the amount that you pay for. Really they should clarify this problem.
