Actually there is no Ventura Highway. It is the Ventura Freeway, Highway 101 that runs from Hollywood through the San Fernando Valley then to Ventura. It only runs down the coast from Ventura to Santa Barbara and is a very beautiful stretch of highway. The stretch of PCH your referring to is PCH State Highway 1 from Santa Monica to Pt. Mugu. PCH has a very eclectic name and gets its name changed many times from town to town, but it is still highway 1. Either way, the song is Bitchin'.

Such a great tune. I remember when this first song came out, I bought it and "Just Another Day" by Jon Secada as singles on cassette tapes. I told my friends "These are songs that will still be awesome 20 years from now..." So far, both Jon and Tom are holding up. Now seriously - Steve Morse is an outstanding guitarist - but Ritchie Blackmore IS DEEP PURPLE. He defined the band. Ritchie was one of Morse's influences. He grew up learning from Blackmore, among others. Steve's playing with Purple is pretty damn good - the best of any replacement I've heard. But he's still replacing the master - Ritchie. Long live Blackmore - the guitar solo innovation on Highway Star alone puts him light years beyond Morse, and I adore Steve Morse.

What about Hendrix with 'All Along The Watchtower'? Or the Byrds with 'Mr. Tambourine Man'? Dylan is a genius, and I love his own versions of his songs, but there is a LONG list of artists who have outdone Dylan on his own songs. Dylan has often said others have performed his songs better than himself.

saw him in 74, he brought down the place. 2 other bands got booed off, waiting for him to come on (not a nice thing to do, and don't even remember who they were) but he was great. glad to know he is still rocking like he used to. saw edgar with derringer (white trash) in 72 and he was great too, but johnny was better. would be great to see them both together in concert.

I cant understand how they could write this song/record, record it and then be satisfied with it after having written masterpieces like keep the faith, these days, slippery and New Yersey. This was an arguement I had with my former led singer so many times last year - it should be moted that he was 30 and I was 23 at the time so there's the automatic generation gap. what's everyone's beef with the whistle? I think the contrast between the whistle and the message of the song is quite brilliant. It gives a real off balance edge to the anger in the song. Dylan did anger like noone i've ever heard and the whistle was part of that. I for one miss the whistle.....i'm gonna go and find my whistle.

..and, sorry, I find it easier to play a solo like the Perucci version. With a good picking technicque it is easy to create this solo in a such version. Trying to play the Blackmore Version you need "magic". But as I said: Both great versions

Petrucci IS a great guitar player. He has a(very)good technique,he HAS feeling, he CAN write songs and he isn´t a shredder without soul. People who beleve this, have no idea of good guitar playng. But Ritchie Blackmore is one of the most inspirating musicans in this style of music (Hard Rock, Heavy Metal whatever you want). His style is unreached, he´s Godfather of Rock guitar AND his version of this solo is BETTER! AND his technique is very well too. But both guitar players have a cool style.

Petrucci has no style, no class, no true ability, he aint even a patch on Blackmore by a long long way. Blackmore's deft touch, sustain, style & feel are all missing. The keyboards are pathetic, and nothing compared to Jon Lord, and the drummer aint no Ian Paice. Awful. Compared with Blackmore, Petrucci is a pathetic amatuer.

to "murrcom": It may be "professional" but it is too robotic and sterile. Music is more than just rattling out notes as if it were a machine gun, without any soul. Its like comparing a computer generated image with a real person, the computer generated image might be 'perfect' but I'd rather have a real person with all the inflection, warmth, style and feel. Gimme feeling over cold 'professionalism' alone which to me aint musical and consequently Petrucci totally fails as a musician for me.

to "Resevil": Petrucci is all technical nd robotic, no soul, just a collection of notes rapidly played one after the other in sequence, no inflection, no character, played with no emotion,no feel,no real ability. Way too robotic & sterile in his playing, leaves me cold,not what a true MUSICIAN should convey to the listener at all. Petrucci is a dwarf among musicians, with a fraction of the ability of Blackmore. Blackmore could wipe the floor with Petrucci. Blackmore was the man, a true MUSICIAN.
