Bryan Ferry asked for permission to cover this track from John Lennon out of respect for it's genius. John gave his permission a few day's before he was Murdered. Bryan did not recieve the message as he was on tour, when he did get the sad news of Johns death and also the permission Roxy Music performed it live on tour as a tribute and as a consequence was released as a single. Both versions are awesome and i felt Bryan that he did this song proud altho il always love the original..

i agree with impdream70 and paese80 i like both versions, but i like lennon's better because he made it sound more like rock and ferry made it sound a little like techno. I am a HUGE beatles fan but i don't over obsess about them. and leets197, i think that lennon is a much cooler guy, he was so inspirational and original while ferry just sounds like any other 80's pop singer

I just want to remind people that this isn't about GD being "better" than JL. Let's just be clear on this. I happen to like GD's cover more than JL's original version. I don't think GD is better at all. We're talking about one song. To be fair, we can't really compare the careers between someone who's only been around a few years to someone who's music has been around for decades. They can't be compared accurately. I can't see GD ever being better than JL, but I also can't predict the future.

I'm not going to argue covers. Covers are only good when they are great or live. I tend to stay away from them unless they are outstanding. Just because he's throwing his voice around doesn't make him better than lennon. I think that this is a futile argument because some people don't like Lennon just because of Yoko,or because he was "weird" or because everyone else does. But history has judged him and he has stood the test. I am sorry but i don't think Gavin Degraw will go down as a legend.

I guess I just can't fathom anyone thinking Gavin Degraw is better than John Lennon. As for vocal range yeah, gavin has good range but nothing to write home about. I respect that he write and plays, more than i can say for most of our contemporary "musicians" but I don't think he tops lennon. have you LISTENED to his live perfomances? He and the beatles recorded the Please Please Me album in 13 HOURS straight! That's so intense vocal fortitude.

Completely disagree. This was obviously a very personal song for John Lennon. He had a lot of anger and desertion issues and I think the emotion comes out beautifully in his voice. He also had one of the best rock n' roll voices of all time (Rock n Roll Music and Twist and Shout for ex). Gavin's cover doesn't have the crescendo and feeling. I find it a little boring.

Well put, I agree entirely. This really shouldn't offend people at all. No one is trying to shade Lennon out of his much deserved credit. No one can deny the legend that he is, and who would want to? Lennon will always be the reason this song exists, and just because He is no longer with us, doesn't mean that others cannot continue to honor his greatness by letting his music live on. I know my name is GavinFan08 and everything, but I personally think Gavin covers this song better than Lennon. Dont get me wrong, Lennon did a great job. Just Gavin adds more twists and seems like he puts more emotion into it...and not to mention that the piano playing is done beautifully. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but it's just my opinion. Oh I see now... yeah you couldn't have gotten that more wrong. That was the last third of what I originally wrote. I was saying that at the time he sang this song he was still a newly discovered artist. And Lennon had been around for years with the Beatles before he was on his own. The Beatles gave him a great start. Gavin came out on his own, and at the time was very impressive. I know how tough this song is to sing and play on the piano at the same time - John Lennon himself didn't even do that, but then again, Lennon's score was vastly more complex, with different rhythmic patterns for the vocal and the instrumental parts. Also, many people who posted here seem to believe that Degraw "sings it better than Lennon did." I think i went saturday, can't really remember. As good as they were and they were really good, I think City and Colour was better. Had never heard of Dallas before and he has an absolutely amazing voice, he's so passionate when he sings.
