you have to be part of a rehabilitation project to "own" one, but you cant domesticate it, they are an endangered species, so once they get to a certain age, they are released to repopulate areas of south america. i think the only way to actually own one is to have a breeding pair in captivity, and have the offspring released to the wild. either way, its alot of schooling, and licensing to be done first.

it is legal as far as I know. They're not a threatened species, if however vulnerable so that should be fine. In South American countries ocelots are sometimes kept as pets.

I had an Oncilla (they are smaller than the Ocelot) once in Chile, my brother found it while he was hunting rabbits, it just behave like a feral cat, didn't like to be held but he was very playful and very smart. One day he just left, we used to live next to the mountains, who knows what happened, I just hope he lived and died free.

One easy way to cut back on these gas guzzling machines of unreal pollution is a HUGE registration fee on any vehicle that weighs over a certain weight or cost a certain amount to fill the tank. Toilet paper is wasteful and full of carcinogens. Some peoples have used fine sand or peat moss , then put it around their flowers. We use an outhouse for 6 months, then fill it back in with soil from digging the new outhouse. After a year, we dig up the cured waste from the old outhouse to use as fertilizer or to heal skin diseases. It heals acne, poison ivy rash, eczema, and psoriasis.

Hmm. Interesting points, Oregonzoo. I suppose, if the elephants truly enjoy it and are free to do it or not as they please, it sounds like a good thing. And I'm glad the zoo is using protected contact. I'm not crazy about the stark, artificial environments; I wish you had enough room to let them graze, bathe, socialize, play, and raise little ones as they were meant to. Or do you have that much room for them? I've never been there... I was in Portland in february but I was sick so I couldn't go!

Painting (and other activities) are primarily considered intellectual enrichment for elephants. As of this writing there is one bull elephant that continues to paint. This particular bull (Rama) seems to genuinely enjoy the activity, as do his keepers. Because keepers work with bulls with a "protected contact" barrier, Rama can choose to disengage without consequence. In many cases the painting takes place out of public view.

i agree with you completely journeyman47. now my point is very simple. this is the start of a "revolution of consciousness". just like past generations black people had to suffer horrible pain just to be able to show they were our equals, so their descendants could feel equality, like they do now, fellow animals like these elephants must suffer the same fate. you could call them precursors of their kind. i assure you, in the future humans will treat all creatures like equals.

I know they are fellow animals and posess greater intelligence than we give them credit for. The problem I have with having them paint is 1. What goes on behind the scenes-- in Thailand elephants are beaten and prodded to force them to paint, and 2 Maybe not in the U.S., but like I said, it reinforces the belief that it's ok for fellow animals to perform for us. They are not ours for food, fur or entertainment. I say let's let them be elephants, not performing monkeys for us.

Man, you're all wrong. ocelots are legal to own in most states, but it is definitely not advisable if you do not own more a few acres of densely forested land. They grow to be about twice the size of a housecat, but kittens are about the same size as a grown housecat. They were classified a "vulnerable" endangered species from the 1980s until 1996 due to hunting for their beautiful fur, but are now generally considered "least concern" by the 2006 IUCN Red List. They also like to swim.

Hi Reefshadow I am a little sketchy on specific details, but the endangered population is specific to an isolated area of the columbia basin. This population was considered distinct because of their genetic isolation and variation. Mostly they are gone, but they are interbreeding these with other healthier populations of pygmy rabbits.

OK, this is weird, but I swear we have a population of these guys on our property in east wenatchee, washington. we and our neighbors have seen them every year. very small size, white ear margins, but we haven't located any burrows. How endangered are these? Up the road a mile is sagebrush habitat and the average lot size is an acre.
